Educational and Research Purpose

The Department of Regional Sciences in the Graduate School of Sustainability Science aims to conduct educational and research activities for the creation of unique and sustainable local communities and for the character formation based on life-span development and regional education and develop advanced practical professionals or researchers who can contribute to regional development.

Diploma Policy

The Department of Regional Sciences of the Graduate School of Sustainability Science at Tottori University, based on the educational purpose of this department, awards the master’s degree (regional sciences or education) to its graduate students when they have completed the educational program specified by this department, have passed the thesis review and final examinations after acquiring the predetermined number of credits, and have acquired the skills stated in the following:

  • Have acquired a broad perspective and deep academic knowledge that contribute to creating a sustainable society, as well as achieved highly specialized expertise and skills for regional science and education, and have acquired excellent research competencies to identify and solve problems or the capability to engage in an occupation that requires a high level of expertise
  • Be motivated to contribute to the development of regional science and education with high ethical standards
  • Have communication skills to cooperate to solve various issues on regional science and education related to the creation of a sustainable society

Curriculum Policy

The Department of Regional Sciences of the Graduate School of Sustainability Science at Tottori University, to enable its graduate students to acquire the skills shown in the policy for awarding degrees, organizes and implements a systematic educational program under the policies stated in the following:

  • Educational program and contents
    • *This department organizes a systematic educational program with specialized subjects composed of basic and advanced courses to acquire deep academic knowledge, as well as general subjects composed of foundational and transdisciplinary courses to obtain a broader perspective.
    • *To foster a high level of expertise, the willingness to practice and collaborate to solve regional issues, it provides a variety of advanced subjects that include exercises and practical subject practicum in each field of regional development, international regional culture, developmental sciences, and learning sciences.
    • *To discipline its graduate students for the research methodology through one-to-one tutoring, it provides Special Research as a compulsory subject among the basic subjects.
    • *It provides its graduate students with a subject on researcher’s ethics as a compulsory subject to acquire the high ethical standards required to carry out research.
  • Method of education
    • *This department aims for substantial educational guidance, focusing on small group education and one-on-one tutoring.
    • *It aims for the vitalization of communication and active in-depth learning in lectures, focusing on practical studies, fieldwork, and cooperative learning as a whole educational program that includes classroom-related subjects.
  • Evaluation of learning achievements
    • *This department evaluates the learning achievements of its graduate students for each subject according to the assessment criteria for academic performance defined in advance.
    • *To review a thesis submitted by a graduate student, it strictly evaluates the relevant learning achievements according to the assessment criteria and method of academic performance defined in advance.
    • *It verifies its educational program based on the learning achievements of graduate students and the questionnaire.

Admission Policy

The Department of Regional Sciences of the Graduate School of Sustainability Science at Tottori University widely accepts graduate students stated in the following by conducting various entrance examinations in this department:

  • Those who have achieved expertise and skills equivalent to those in the undergraduate course on regional sciences and education
  • Those who have a wide range of interests in global and local issues on the creation of a sustainable society
  • Those who, with high ethical standards, aim to contribute to the creation and development of a sustainable society in cooperation with others from the standpoint of regional sciences and education
  • Those who aspire to acquire communication skills to collaborate with other fields in order to create a sustainable society, taking advantage of their respective expertise on regional sciences and education

According to this admission policy, the Department of Regional Sciences selects graduate students multi-directionally and quantitatively with the evaluation method shown in the annexed table.
