Educational and Research Purpose

The Department of Engineering in the Graduate School of Sustainability Science offers advanced education and conducts research related to cutting-edge manufacturing technology, advanced information society technologies, advanced chemical technology and biotechnology, and social technology that supports the humanosphere. At the same time, it aims to develop advanced professional engineers or researchers who meet diverse needs in the engineering field by leveraging the aforementioned technologies toward the creation of a sustainable society.

Diploma Policy

The Department of Engineering of the Graduate School of Sustainability Science at Tottori University, based on the educational purpose of this department, awards the master’s degree (engineering or philosophy) to its graduate students when they have completed the educational program specified by this department, have passed the review of a thesis or the results of a research on a specific subject as well as final examinations after acquiring the predetermined number of credits, and have the acquired skills stated in the following:

  • By having a broad perspective and deep academic knowledge in engineering field, to have the capability to contribute to the community through conducting research in engineering or engaging in an occupation pertaining to technology development;
  • To have social responsibility and ethical standards, considering the global environment and the happiness and welfare of mankind; and
  • To have communication skills for logical statements, presentations and discussions, and to have research competencies leading to identify and solve problems.

Although it basically awards the Master of Engineering to its graduate students, this Department assumes that their study may include other fields. In such cases, it awards the Master of Philosophy after examining their academic history and thesis.

Curriculum Policy

The Department of Engineering of the Graduate School of Sustainability Science at Tottori University, to enable its graduate students to acquire the skills shown in the policy for awarding degrees, organizes and implements a systematic educational program under the policies stated in the following:

  • Educational program and contents
    • *The Department of Engineering of the Graduate School of Sustainability Science at Tottori University organizes a systematic educational program with specialized subjects composed of basic and advanced courses to acquire deep academic knowledge, as well as general subjects composed of foundational and transdisciplinary courses to obtain a broader perspective.
    • *It provides advanced subjects for its graduate students to acquire high-level, deep academic knowledge systematically in the engineering field.
    • *It provides general major subjects for its graduate students to rouse their academic interest, as well as obtain a broad perspective and academic knowledge.
    • *It provides its graduate students with a subject on researcher’s ethics as a compulsory subject to acquire the high ethical standards required to carry out research.
  • Method of education
    • *This department organizes experiments and exercises in the field of engineering to form the capabilities to identify, analyze, and solve issues, as well as to put plans into practice in society.
    • *It fosters high ethical standards and communication skills through research in this master’s program.
  • Evaluation of learning achievements
    • *This department evaluates the learning achievements of its graduate students according to the assessment criteria for academic performance defined in advance and strictly evaluates the novelty and originality of the thesis with a review and final examination.
    • *It verifies its educational program based on the learning achievements of graduate students and the questionnaire.

Admission Policy

The Department of Engineering of the Graduate School of Sustainability Science at Tottori University widely accepts graduate students stated in the following by conducting various entrance examinations in this department:

  • Those who have achieved expertise and skills equivalent to those in the undergraduate course on mechanical and space engineering, information electronics, chemistry and bioengineering, or social system civil engineering
  • Those who aim to be an engineer or a researcher who has acquired a broad perspective and deep academic knowledge that can harmonize and integrate knowledge and technology, learning these capable to meet diversifying needs in the engineering field
  • Those who, with high ethical standards, aim to be an engineer or a researcher who has high-level expertise that contributes to the creation and development of a sustainable society
  • Those who intend to acquire the high-level capabilities to identify and solve issues and those who have the communication skills to tackle and deal with engineering problems for the creation of a sustainable society

According to this admission policy, the Department of Engineering selects graduate students multi-directionally and quantitatively with the evaluation method shown in the annexed table.
