Educational and Research Purpose

The Department of Agricultural Science in the Graduate School of Sustainability Science provides education and conducts research related to advanced biological production technology, biotechnology, environmental protection and restoration technologies as well as economic and business analyses. The department aims to develop advanced professionals or researchers who can contribute to sustainable global and regional development.

Diploma Policy

The Department of Agricultural Science of the Graduate School of Sustainability Science at Tottori University, based on the educational purpose of this department, awards the master’s degree (Agriculture) to its graduate students when they have completed the educational program specified by this department, have passed the thesis review and final examinations after acquiring the predetermined number of credits, and have the acquired skills stated in the following:

  • Not only to have a broad perspective on advanced bioproduction technology, biological technology, the uncovering and utilization of biological resources, technologies of environmental conservation and restoration, and economic and managerial analysis, as well as deep academic knowledge in the field of agricultural science, but to have the capability to carry out research that leads to the identification and solution to or the capability to engage in an occupation that requires a high level of expertise
  • Have acquired the capabilities to contribute to building a sustainable society through the sustained yield of agricultural products and the conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of the environment
  • Have acquired the communication skills to disseminate the research results to the community, while gathering information related to various issues in the fields of agriculture and forestry with high ethical standards

Curriculum Policy

The Department of Agricultural Science of the Graduate School of Sustainability Science at Tottori University, to enable its graduate students to acquire the skills shown in the policy for awarding degrees, organizes and implements a systematic educational program under the policies stated in the following:

  • Educational program and contents
    • *This department organizes a systematic educational program with specialized subjects composed of basic and advanced courses to acquire deep academic knowledge on agricultural science, as well as general subjects composed of foundational and transdisciplinary courses to obtain a broader perspective.
    • *It provides subjects for its graduate students to acquire not only expert knowledge but high ethical standards, English skills, and the communication skills needed to carry out research.
  • Method of education
    • *This department provides education to improve its graduate students’ overall capabilities to identify, analyze, solve, and explain issues through practical exercises and research activities. Specifically, it provides the education for its graduate students to systematically acquire knowledge and technology in various fields related to agricultural science, such as the strengthening of local agriculture and forestry industries associated with sustainable society in agricultural, mountain, and fishing villages; biotechnology; the utilization of fungus/mushroom resources and the forest; and the development of the fishing industry.
  • Evaluation of learning achievements
    • *This department evaluates its graduate students’ professional and autonomous research capabilities in agricultural science and related fields according to the assessment criteria for academic performance defined in advance. Moreover, it holds a thesis defense to strictly evaluate the novelty and originality of the thesis.
    • *It verifies its educational program based on the learning achievements of graduate students and the questionnaire.

Admission Policy

The Department of Agricultural Science of the Graduate School of Sustainability Science at Tottori University, by conducting various entrance examinations in this department, widely accepts graduate students who voluntarily and actively learn agriculture science essential for human existence and aim to contribute to the local and international community as a highly skilled expert or a researcher with a broad perspective and high creativity as stated in the following:

  • Those who are concerned about foods, the environment and life and have achieved expertise and skills equivalent to those in the undergraduate course
  • Those who aim to acquire deep academic knowledge, exploring, with a broad perspective, the strengthening of local agriculture and forestry industries, biotechnology, the utilization of fungus/mushroom resources and the forest, the globalization of agriculture and forestry, and the protection of the environment
  • Those who aim to contribute to the development of humans, the community, and science through scientific thinking and judgment, as well as a strong willingness to absorb information
  • Those who, with scientific ethical standards and a sense of responsibility, intend to acquire the high-level capabilities to identify and solve issues and have the communication skills taking advantage of high creativity

To accept such students, the Department of Agricultural Science provides opportunities through entrance examinations to evaluate skills required for new students multi-directionally and comprehensively.

According to this admission policy, the Department of Agricultural Science selects graduate students multi-directionally and quantitatively with the evaluation method shown in the annexed table.
